The Luton Council of Faiths strongly condemns the suspected arson attack on the AlMadinah Islamic Prayer Hall in Dublin. A place of worship should always be a sanctuary of peace, prayer and community. Any attack on a place of worship is an attack on the fundamental freedoms of religion, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the congregation and all those affected by this deeply distressing incident. We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community in Dublin, across Ireland and here in the UK. This incident comes at a time when anti-Muslim hatred is a growing and deeply worrying reality. We continue to see an increase in hostility, abuse and attacks directed at Muslims and Islamic institutions. Such hatred has no place in any civilised society and must be challenged wherever it occurs.
We welcome the swift response of the emergency services and An Garda Síochána and note that a man has been arrested in connection with the investigation. We trust that the investigation will be thorough and that justice will take its course.
Whether directed at a mosque, church, synagogue, temple, gurdwara or any other place of worship, hate seeks to divide communities through fear. Our collective response must be to stand together, reject all forms of prejudice and protect one another's right to worship freely and safely.
